Objective: To know about the adherence to antiretroviral treatment according to three indirect methods. To relate the results to the patient's virologic status, determined by his/her viral load (VL). Method: The chosen indirect methods were: computer records of administration obtained from the pharmacy department (presenting the indicators ADHmid3 and ADHmid, for the temporary analysis of the process), questionnaire (SMAQ) and clinical judgement (CJ). ADHmid3 was established as a standard method, by evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of the others versus this one. Undetectable VL was associated with complying patient. Results: 361 patients were included. The level of adherence according to the indicators was of: ADHmid3 = 70.7%, ADHmidt = 68.5%, SMAQ = 63.0%, CJ = 94.1%, VL = 81.4%. Statistically significant differences were found among all the indicators, except between ADHmid3 and ADHmidt. Conclusion: The results of the ADHmid3 temporary adherence indicator, are the closest ones to the patient's virologic status. Due to that fact, this could be considered a useful tool in pharmaceutical interventions on adherence
