  • The recent Chinese economic development it is becoming a crucial supplier to customer and growing economies. One wonders what qualitative changes accompany this quantitative progression. Knowledge of the terms of trade is an inexcusable way to answer it.

    The empirical literature on Chinese terms of trade deterioration noted 17% of them between 1997 and 2004. The series here proposed, constructed from the Statistical Yearbook of China, extending the study period to 2010 confirms that deterioration but also shows a clear improvement from 2004.

    The components of this improvement has been, since 2004, the highest growth rates of exports and strengthening the terms of trade in manufactures, main item of Chinese trade. The causes must be sought in the evolution of the real economy, which deserves further detailed study.
