Resumen de Modelación jerárquica en las finanzas públicas

Mario Ojeda, Fernando Velasco

  • Hierarchical linear models are a general class of models that allow modeling in a variety of situations in which there are data that have a hierarchical structure. The hierarchical data structure occur frequently in studies of public finances, which are commonly analyzed variables measured on entities (states or provinces), which in turn are composed of sub-entities (towns or municipalities). It also presents the case of entities that are studied over a period of several years, so we have a sample of years nested entities. This paper provides an introduction to hierarchical linear models and illustrates its application to problems of public finances. The document is divided into three sections: the first provides a characterization of the data with hierarchical structure, in the second hierarchical linear models are developed in particular-that experience of the authors are the most application-, and finally in the third section it is presented two examples of application to public finances.
