Resumen de Financiamiento para la innovación en los nuevos sectores estratégicos del Ecuador

Lupe Páez, María Moreno

  • The venture capital investments are distinguished because of the monetary injections they make in different economic sectors that have generally a not fully known behavior. The arrival of the technological revolution has enabled to experience changes in the economic performance of countries such as Britain and the United States, which are the pioneers in this funding method in both public and private initiative.

In the case of Ecuador, the government investment is prioritizing these strategic sectors. The production model is experiencing changes in the business behavior, which ultimately results in the shift from a traditional economy to the so-called knowledge-based economy. This paper analyzes the possible sources of innovation from this kind of investments, and besides the migration of these capital injections from traditional economic sectors to the so-called strategic sectors.

The main premise is that innovation activities boost productivity and economic growth in general, and this analysis is the fundamental platform to invest in these emerging sectors such as Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Biomedicine, Renewable Energy, Information Technology and Communication (ICTs) in which Research, Development and Innovation (R+D+i) are the priority. Therefore, it is important to study the risk investments behavior in these sectors putting together the government initiative from R & D policy and the private enterprise.
