La publicación en 1559 de Index Librorum Prohibitorum supuso para los escritores una voluntaria autocensura en distintas vertientes de contenido para no caer en las iras eclesiásticas. El mito grecolatino, tan fecundo hasta entonces, hubo de ser tratado con suma habilidad para no ofrecer sospechas de paganismo o, lo que es aún peor, de herejía. No obstante, los poetas siempre supieron aplicar su ingenio a la causa, como Lope de Vega demuestra en este Soneto.

The publishing, in 1559, of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum drove writers to voluntary self censorship regarding several subjects, in order not provoke ecclesiastic outrage. The Greek and Roman myths, which had been such a fruitful source until then, had to be approached with the utmost craftsmanship, so as not to arouse suspicions of paganism or, even worse, heresy. Nevertheless, poets always could apply their wits to this effect, as shown in this Soneto by Lope of Vega.
