The poetic production of the humanist Pierio Valeriano (Belluno 1477 - Padua 1558) has been rarely studied, even though it is rather extensive. His name and reputation are linked to his prose works, in particular Hieroglyphica. These papers attempt to show that it is precisely poetry that lies at the centre of the young humanists vocation and activity. This can be seen in his early autobiographical poem De calamitate uitae suae, which he wrote when he was 24 years old and was trying to expand his literary horizons. The full text of the poem is included in an appendix, and several references to it and comments on it are made.
