The literary depiction of the real Roman woman, as transmitted by laudatory verse epitaphs, basically reflects the combination of two traditions, the literary and the epigraphic; both came together to forge an ideal and theoretical model which was subsequently adapted to different social realities and historic periods. But alongside the commonplaces, and independently of them, there gradually appeared original and unique elements endowing each of these compositions with a special interest. To illustrate this, a number of models are that combine the old and the new.
