¿El género en las matemáticas?: un análisis de los resultados de las olimpiadas matemáticas

    Se parte de la investigación: Análisis de Género en los resultados de la Olimpiadas Matemáticas en Santander (Colombia) y diseño de propuestas pedagógicas para la equidad, con el Grupo de Investigación en Población, Ambiente y Desarrollo.

    Se analizan los resultados obtenidos por la Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia, con el propósito de evaluar cuantitativamente diferencias por sexo y la relación de los resultados con el tipo de colegio y el municipio de origen de los jóvenes. Se trabajó por cohortes anuales de las pruebas realizadas en el periodo 2009 -2012. Es descriptiva de tipo transversal- correlacional, en la que se cruzó la variable sexo con el desempeño final de la competencia en matemáticas, y los resultados con el tipo de colegio y el municipio de procedencia. La Escuela de Matemáticas de la Universidad Industrial de Santander, suministró 36 listados de estudiantes de educación media de los diferentes municipios del departamento, que presentaron las tres pruebas matemáticas en los cuatro años de olimpiadas tomados como muestra para la investigación (2009 a 2012). Con esta fuente secundaria y otras de campo se comparó el desempeño por sexo de estudiantes participantes De los resultados se destaca que los puntajes no indican correlación estadísticamente significativa por sexo, por el contrario, la diferencia radica en el tipo de colegio, presentando mayor rendimiento en los colegios privados y en aquellos participantes de los municipios que concentran las mayores zonas urbanas del departamento de Santander. El estudio permite concluir que si bien existe una menor participación femenina en las pruebas de matemáticas, el resultado de éstas depende más de factores como el tipo de colegio, público o privado, y su ubicación, urbano o rural.

    The analysis of the results obtained by students of secondary education in the mathematics Olympics carried out annually by the school of mathematics de la Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia, Colombia, with the purpose of evaluating quantitatively differences by gender and the relationship of the results with the type of school and the municipality of origin of young people.

    Methodologically, an analysis was performed by annual cohort of tests performed in the period 2009-2012. Descriptive research of type cross - correlation, in which crossed the variable sex with final competition in mathematics performance, and the results with the type of school and the municipality of origin. The school of mathematics of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, provided 36 lists of students of middle school education in the different municipalities of the Department, who presented the three math tests in the four years of Olympic Games taken as a sample for research (years 2009 to 2012). Looking for well know and compare performance by sex of students participating in final tests of mathematical Olympiads. Outcomes that the scores do not indicate statistically significant correlation by sex, on the other hand, the difference lies in the type of school, featuring higher performance in private schools and those participants of the municipalities that concentrate major urban areas of the Department of Santander. The study makes it possible to conclude that while there is a lower female participation in math tests, the result of these depends more on factors such as the type of school, public or private, and its location, urban or rural.
