El artículo analiza el problema del sufrimiento social en los escritos tempranos de Max Horkheimer. Se sugiere así, en primer lugar, que su temprana crítica materialista de la metafísica (base de su idea originaria de teoría crítica) se fundamenta en una interpretación del sufrimiento en tanto experiencia social imposible de justificar. En segundo lugar se examina la idea de una crítica ma-terialista del sufrimiento en tanto reflexión filosófica que pretende expresar en su estructura conceptual misma tanto las experiencias de padecimiento social como las luchas históricas por su emancipación. Finalmente se sugiere la relevancia de una crítica del sufrimiento para una teoría crítica contemporánea.

This article examines the problem of social suffering in Max Horkheimer's early writings. It is argued, in the first place, that his early materialist critique of metaphysics (which is the basis of his original notion of critical theory) is based on an interpretation of suffering as unjustifiable social experience. Secondly, this article examines the idea of materialist critique of suffering as philosophical reflection that aims to express in its conceptual structure itself both the expe-riences of social suffering and the historical struggles for its emancipation. Finally, the article points out the relevance of a critique of suffering to build the foundations of a contemporary critical theory.
