A mediados de los años sesenta, Jean Améry formuló la pregunta de la que parte este texto: ¿Cuánta patria necesita el ser humano? Por entonces hacía falta una buena dosis de valor para plantearla; eso ha cambiado. Después de largas reflexiones, Améry llegaba a un veredicto conciso: no es bueno carecer de un lugar donde uno se sienta en casa. Se trata de una formulación impac-tante, y otra pregunta surge de forma lógica: ¿Cuánto amparo necesita el ser humano, cuánta extrañeza es capaz de soportar? En las páginas siguientes quisiera llegar hasta el fondo de estas cuestiones y pasar revista de las expe-riencias que uno puede hacer con la dialéctica entre amparo y extrañeza.

In the mid sixties Jean Améry formulated the question this essay starts with: how much homeland does a human being need? At that time it took some courage to pose this question; though things have changed. After long reflec-ting, Arméry came to a concise veredict: it is not good not to have a place where you can feel home. That is a striking formulation, and another ques-tion follows logically: how much homeland does a human being need, how much strangeness is he able to bear? In this essay I would like to go through the experiences of the dialectics of homelandness and foreigness and try to get to the core of these questions.
