    En 1704, al fallecer D. Femando Matías Arias y Saavedra, pasó el señorío de Fuerteventura a su nieto Francisco Alejandro Bautista Benítez de Lugo y Arias de Saavedra, menor de edad aún, que formaba parte de una acendrada familia de La Orotava. Ambas estirpes supieron comunicar a su descendencia el patrocinío artístico y cultural como exemplum virtutis. Éste se expresó en distintas manifestaciones: la vivienda particular y el patronato de la capilla mayor del convento franciscano de S. Lorenzo, incluyendo la imagen del santo titular, en la citada Villa; el mantenimiento de la arquitectura castrense en Tenerife y Fuerteventura, aquí mediante la carga impositiva de los «quintos»; el Jardín Botánico en el Puerto de la Cruz ... Así, con el transcurrir del tiempo pasaron del patrocinio religioso y el tributo castrense al mecenazgo cultural, característico de la Ilustración.

    En 1704, upon the death ofD. Femando Matías Arias y Saavedra, the title of Lord of Fuerteventura passed to his underage grandson Francisco Alejandro Bautista Benítez de Lugo y Arias de Saavedra, a member of an important family ofLa Orotava. Both lines of progenitors inculcated their descendants with patronage ofthe arts and the culture as exemplum virtutis. This was expressed in diverse manners: the private home and the patronage ofthe major chapel of the Franciscan convent of Saint Laurent, including the image of the titular Saint, in the afore-mentioned Villa ofLa Orotava; the maintenance ofthe military architecture in Tenerife and Fuerteventura, by means of taxes known as «quintos»; the Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz ... Thus, over time, the members of the family progressed from religious and military patronage to the cultural patronage, characteristic of the Illustration Period.
