  • Objective: To standardize the prescription of antiulcerous (AU) drugs in sociosanitary centers by elaborating a usage protocol and by analyzing the repercussion of its implementation in sociosanitary pharmacotherapy. Method: A standardized protocol of antiulcerous drugs for the treatment of the acid peptic disease and of the gastropathy's prophylaxis by NSAIDs is elaborated after a literature review. It is approved by Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommitee of the Sociosanitary Centers in Castellon previous to its implementation. A selection of 118 geriatric patients treated with ranitidine (RAN) or omeprazole (OMP) took place out of the 649 assisted patients from the Pharmacy Departments of the Residence for the Elderly in Burriana, and who received medication by means of a unit-dose drug distribution system. Results: From the total of assisted interns, 118 of them (18.2%) were treated with RAN or OMP. After the application of the protocol, the prescription of AU drugs for NSAID gastropathy prophylaxis was reduced from a 37.5% to a 29.3%, because its use was not justified. Moreover, the association of NSAID with both AU drugs decreases from a 26% to a 12.1%, while for the rest of alternatives available in the protocol with the same indication an increase in consumption takes place. Conclusions: The establishment of criteria for the use of highly prescribed medication for the elderly, like RAN and OMP, allows for the prescription of such drugs based on therapeutic indications and the recommended treatment duration. Due to this, the treatment efficacy will improve and problems related to medication (PRM) will be reduced, besides allowing for the therapeutic exchange of these treatments with other more cost-effective alternatives
