Composición y adecuación de los botiquines familiares de los pacientes inmovilizados

    • Objectives: To know home medicine chests characteristics for the incapacitated population from the home visitation program. Method: Cross-sectional study undertaken in rural centers of primary care. Systematic sampling of immobilized patients, who were asked about sociodemographic data during home visitations, furthermore taking place a quantitative and qualitative checking of the medicine chests. Statistical descriptive analysis. Results: 159 homes were visited. The living room was the most selected site for placing the medicine chest (46.7%). 50.3% of patients discards drugs by primarily throwing them to the garbage (68.6%). A third of patients does not read the information leaflet, and another third does not understand them. 38.1% of families does not revise the medicine chests. The average number of containers per medicine chest was of 9.3 ± 5.5. The most used drugs by the immobilized patients were analgesics, cardiovascular drugs, antiulcerous drugs and tranquilizers. Conclusions: Immobilized patients store a large number of drugs in their medicine chests, often inappropriately, being necessary the establishment of a health education program
