  • Objective: To evaluate the use of the community pharmacy (CP) in the diagnose and improvement on the degree of control of arterial hypertension (AHT). Method: Intervention study without random assignation. Three measures of arterial pressure (AP) were made under standard conditions and with a validated automatic electronic device (OMRON 705 CP) to people older than 18 that came to the CP for any reason. Those who were not known as hypertensive, if the values of the 2 nd-3 rd measurements were = 140/90 mmHg, were cited for another two days. When the average values of six measurements (2 nd-3 rd measurements of the three days) were = 140/90 mmHg, the patients were sent to their healthcare centers (HC) as possible new hypertensives. Those known as hypertensive, if the average values of the 2 nd-3 rd measurements were = 140/90 mmHg, were considered as inadequately controlled and were given a test of therapeutic compliance. An educational intervention was made to those who did not comply. Those inadequately controlled, but with good compliance, were sent to their HC. All were cited back after six weeks. Results: 36 CP participated, in which the AP was measured to 326 non-hypertensive patients and to 275 known as hypertensive. 45 possible hypertensive were diagnosed, from which 24 (53%) confirmed the diagnose in their HC. 135 inadequately controlled hypertensives (49%) were detected, 86 (63.7%) of them complied well and 49 did not, out of which 22 (25.5%) and 16 (32.6%), respectively, were controlled with the intervention. 53 (39.3%) of the hypertensive did not come back for their last appointment. Conclusions: The intervention of CP may help in the diagnose of new hypertensives and in the improvement on the degree of control of AHT
