    El presente trabajo intenta analizar las complejidades inherentes al tratamiento dado a los negros y mulatos esclavos durante el siglo XVIII en el área nororiental del Nuevo Reino de Granada. Estas facetas del trato abarcaron desde normas coercitivas hasta continuos castigos físicos. En cada una de esas actuaciones y medidas, adoptadas tanto por los amos como por las autoridades, subyacían como factores determinantes el estatus inferior asignado al negro en la escala social en razón a su condición esclava y color de piel y, por otro lado, la percepción del hombre blanco frente a él, todo esto en el marco de una sociedad fuertemente jerarquizada y segmentada.

    This paper attempts to analyze the complexities of the treatment given to the black and mulatto slaves in the eighteenth century in the northeastern area of the New Kingdom of Granada. The facets of this treatment ranged from coercive rules to continuous punishment. Within the framework of a hierarchical and segmented society, each of these actions and measures was underpinned, on the one hand, by the inferior status in the social ladder assigned to the blacks due to their slave status and skin color; and on the other hand, by the perception of the white man.
