    This article has as purpose to examine some aspects of the notion of government in Spanish America at the beginning of the seventeenth century. We want especially to assess how one of the main figures of the administrative system organized by the Hispanic Monarchy, the viceroy, understand his governmental functions.

    To accomplish this task, we analyze the relations of government left by viceroys to their successors, in which they were advised, and informed of the essential administrative matters. We examine, therefore, the matters themselves and the language used in these relations. For this work, we selected the documentary corpus produced during the mandates of Juan de Mendoza y Luna, the Marquis of Montesclaros, in New Spain (1603-1607) and Peru (1607-1615), whose legacy, beyond the services provided by some twelve years, constitutes an important reflection about the viceregal government.

    Este artigo examina certos aspectos relativos à noção de governo na América espanhola do início do século XVII.

    Pretendemos, especialmente, avaliar como uma das principais figuras do sistema administrativo organizado pela monarquia hispânica, o vice-rei, compreendia suas funções governativas. Para empreender tal tarefa, analisamos as relações de governo deixadas pelos vice-reis a seus sucessores, nas quais estes eram, além de aconselhados, informados sobre as matérias administrativas fundamentais. Examinamos, portanto, as matérias propriamente ditas e a linguagem utilizada nessas relações. Para este trabalho, selecionamos o corpus documental produzido durante os mandatos de Juan de Mendoza y Luna, o Marquês de Montesclaros, na Nova Espanha (1603-1607) e no Peru (1607-1615), cujo legado, além dos serviços prestados por cerca de doze anos, constitui-se de uma importante reflexão sobre o governo vice-real.
