  • The article discusses when and why civil resistance works as of July 2014, focusing on the levels of success and nonviolence that are associated with various 21st century protests in places such as Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria. The ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is addressed, along with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's alleged crackdown on the demonstrations in his country in 2011. The Russian government's apparent seizure of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea is mentioned, along with skepticism and the late Mahatma Gandhi's Indian independence movement against British colonialism.
