Resumen de Special Issue on Muslim diaspora in the West: : whither international HRM?

Jawad Syed, Edwina Pio

  • Muslim diasporic communities, while originating in countries and/or communities dominated by Islamic religious practices and laws, are far from uniform. They are shaped in their existence and experiences by a complex web of ethnicity, gender, sect, class and sociocultural influences of their adopted homes as migrants, refugees, expatriates or business partners. Within this context, the SI seeks to enhance awareness of the complexity of the Muslim diaspora at work in the West in order to crumble and tease out the dissonance that exists in organizations with reference to Muslims. Specifically, the SI revolves around the following question: What are the positive and challenging international HRM issues facing the Muslim diaspora and organizations in the West? The aim is to present and synthesize research on international HRM (IHRM)-related issues pertaining to Muslim workers in Western countries (e.g., UK and other parts of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) and may include the cultural and organizational contexts, sourcing HR for competitive global markets, training and development, career management, Muslim perspectives on performance management, and approaches to staffing. The SI will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the Muslim diaspora and in so doing facilitate deeper understandings of the Muslim edge in organizations.
