  • Krebs study of German auto repair mechanics in 1950-1980 that rounds out on the automotive sound environments by focusing attention on diagnostic listening. He finds that despite many similarities with US auto mechanics' sense-based expertise, "the unique system of German craft professions helped create robust sociotechnical hierarchies" that integrated expert diagnostic listening into a respected professional "monopoly of competence" and higher social status for mechanics in Germany.
