    El artículo analiza la información disponible sobre un tema poco tratado en relación con el célebre asedio sufrido por el destacamento español en Baler (1898-1899), como es el de los soldados que desertaron. El trabajo desvela nuevos datos sobre sus biografías, intentando establecer los motivos que pudieran haberles llevado a tomar tal decisión, junto con el comportamiento que tuvieron hacia los sitiados y los fusilamientos de algunos de ellos cuando ya faltaban pocos días para que finalizara el asedio.

    The article deals with the available information about a scarcely studied topic, related to the famous siege laid to the Spanish detachment in Baler (1898-1899), such as the soldiers who deserted. The paper offers some details and tries to find out the reasons which could have led them to take such decision, besides their behaviour towards the besieged and the executions of some of them shortly before the end of the siege.
