In the most technologically advanced countries, the activities of private -or even public- initiative are focused preferably on technological development for obtaining patents for applications that will lower the production costs of the countries' industries. In the less developed countries researchers concentrate on basic science and, with a view to obtaining greater recognition, they publish their papers abroad. This article analyses research in the developing countries, with a very clear focus on the field of edaphology.
