The objective was to examina the reliability and the validity of the ST-36 in a sample of people with the HIV in Venezuela. The SF-36 was self-administered in a sample of 118 subjects with HIV+. The reliability was examined by estimating the a of Cronbach. The validity was evaluated by estimating the correlations of Pearson between the dimensions of the SF-36 and a measure of the HIV symptoms and determining the degree in which the SF-36 discriminated among groups of patients that differed clinically. The dimensions of SF-36 showed good reliability and its scores correlated significantly in a negative way with the sumptoms of HIV. Significant differences among groups of patients that differed clinically were found in all dimensions of SF-36, with the exception of mental health. The study provides with evidence of the reliability and the validity of SF-36 in the evaluated sample. However, the sensitivity to helth changes must be evaluated in posterior longitudinal studies
