  • Resumen
    • The incidence of pharmacological toxicity on the elderly is three times higher than in middle-aged adults; this is due to a higher frequency of factors such as pluripathology, polypharmacy, homeostasis reduction, errors in drug intake and failure to carry out, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic variations as well as the comparative shortage on specific studies. In order to achieve the maximum benefit of drugs with the minimum risk, it is necessary to individualize the treatment based upon such factors, to begin with generally smaller doses than the required for adults, to control the patient in order to detect early the effects and act consequently and to re-evaluate periodically the indications, effects and doses of drugs. Finally, the lack of specific studies on the elderly is not a sufficient reason for depriving them from treatments that have showed their efficacy in the general population
