Pharmaceutical intervention in anticonvulsivant treatments of inpatients

  • Resumen
    • Objective: to analyze Pharmaceutical interventions (Pi) related to therapeutic drug Monitoring (tdM) of anticonvulsants and determine the degree of acceptance of physicians.

      Method: Observational study of six months length, performed in a 400-bed hospital, in which all Pi relative to treatments with valproic acid, carbamazepine and/or phenytoin were analyzed. acceptance of the recommendations was assessed and classified into «accepted», «not accepted» and «not assessable recommendations».

      Results: 74 Pi were performed by pharmacists that contained 106 recommendations related to tdM and drug interactions, mainly in internal Medicine (30.2%; n = 32) and Psychiatry departments (25.5%; n = 27). the overall percentage of «accepted» recommendations was 75.5% (n = 80; ci 95% 66.5-82.7), the percentage of «not accepted» was 14.2% (n = 15; ci 95% 8.8-22) and the percentage of those which degree of acceptance could not be assessed was 10.4% (n = 11; ci 95% 5.9-17.6).

      conclusions: the overall percentage of accepted Pi was high. Pharmacist intervention optimizes clinical outcomes and safety of these treatments
