  • Resumen
    • Introduction: Adherence to HAART has been shown as one of the fundamental issues to achieve therapeutic success. However, its reliable measurement is not easy. Several methods have been proposed to assess adherence, each one of them having benefits and disadvantages. Method: Three methods for adherence assessment have been evaluated: method 1: Dispensation Record by the Pharmacy Service (DR); method 2: SMAQ (Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire) questionnaire; method 3: ESPA (Escala Simplificada para detectar Problemas de Adherencia, Simplified Scale for detecting medication Adherence related Problems) questionnaire. Results: All three methods were applied on 122 patients. Rate of patients taking at least 95% of medication was: 77% (DR), 62.3% (SMAQ) and 79.4% (ESPA). Adherence was influenced by years under treatment and number of daily intakes. Conclusion: Since there is no ideal method for adherence assessment, combination of several methods according to the patient's characteristics is important to obtain an accurate measurement
