Objective: To determine the prevalence of potential drug interactions between nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and other drugs that increase the risk of gastrointestinal tract bleeding in patients affiliated to Social Security Health System. Method: Cross sectional study in 6.2 million people in Colombia, between May 1 and July 30, 2012. Dispensations of more than one nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory were identified concurrently during the same month and concomitantly with: aspirin, clopidogrel, corticosteroids and warfarin. Results: We found 6,659 patients receiving nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, residents in 76 cities in Colombia, 4,265 (64%) were women, mean age 56.6 ±20.8 years, of these 1,321 (19.8%) received them in combination therapy with drugs of the same group, but even the 8.2% of cases received three of these drugs. Other 5,172 (77.6%) patients received concomitant acetylsalicylic acid, 1,585 (23.8%) used corticosteroids, 136 (2%) received clopidogrel and 20 (0.3%) were taking warfarin. Discussion: The potential interactions between nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and other drugs are common and there is a significant number of persons subjected to this risk that should be valued by the clinician to reduce the negative outcomes associated with medication
