  Neste artigo, procuro examinar os significados que o casamento e o divórcio católicos tinham para africanos e africanas libertos procedentes da costa ocidental (mais conhecidos como pretos minas) no Rio de Janeiro oitocentista. Como as ex-escravas minas reagiam aos padrões de gênero impostos pelas leis eclesiásticas e pela própria sociedade? E o que os encontros e as disputas conjugais revelavam sobre as novas e velhas formas de identificação desses africanos e africanas? Partindo de um amplo conjunto de fontes eclesiásticas e civis � que incluem registros de casamento e batismo, processos de habilitação matrimonial e de divórcio abertos no Juízo Eclesiástico, inventários, testamentos e registros de alforria -, pretendo avaliar em que medida as motivações desses homens e mulheres se aproximavam � ou se afastavam � daquelas feitas por cônjuges de outras cores, origens e condições sociais. Ao mesmo tempo, também foi possível dimensionar a participação dos africanos ocidentais nos intricados mercados matrimoniais da cidade.

  In this article, I examine the meanings that marriage and divorce Catholics had for African freed originally from the west coast (better known as pretos minas) in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. As the ex-slaves mine reacted to gender standards imposed by ecclesiastical laws and the company it self? And what the meetings and marital disputes revealed about new and old ways of identifying these Africans? Starting from a broad range of civil and ecclesiastical sources - including marriage and baptism records, marriage licenses and processes of open Divorce Judgment in Ecclesiasticus, inventories, wills and records of manumission - I intend to evaluate to what extent the motivations of these men and women approached - or moved away - those made by spouses of other colors , backgrounds and social conditions . At the same time, it was also possible to measure the participation of West Africans in intricate marriage markets.
