Manuel Godoy Álvarez de Faria fue uno de los ilustres estudiantes que pasaron por las aulas del Seminario Metropolitano San Atón de Badajoz, alumnos que alcanzaron los más altos puestos en política o en letras, pues era grande la preparación en materia cultural, social y religosa del mismo, sello de identidad. Mantuvo su vinculación con esta institución hasta el punto de conseguir que Carlos IV lo reconociera como centro universitario a través de la Real Cédula de 17 de agosto de 1793, convirtiéndose así en el primero de la región, estableciendo las facultades de Arte, Teología, Leyes y Cánones y estando adscrita a la Universidad de Salamanca. Sin duda, el mayor y mejor precedente de la Universidad de Extremadura que hoy conocemos.
