En el área sur andina se conserva un relevante conjunto de iglesias que conservan su pintura mural de los siglos XVII y XVIII; en el actual territorio chileno se encuentran dos de estas iglesias, san Andrés de Pachama y la Natividad de Parinacota, ambas ubicadas en el territorio de la antigua doctrina de Belén. El objetivo del presente artículo es identificar las señales que permiten hablar de un renovado impulso de la pintura mural en esta jurisdicción eclesiástica a fines del siglo XVIII, planteando que la definición de los programas iconográficos no se atendría a la aplicación de soluciones estandarizadas, sino que tuvo como punto de partida un conocimiento de las necesidades de la comunidad y una búsqueda del repertorio de imágenes que mejor se podían adecuar a estos requerimientos.

In the southern Andean area, a significant number of churches maintain their mural paintings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Two of these churches are located in what is now Chile: Pachama and Parinacota, in the territory that belonged to the ancient doctrine of Bethlehem. The aim of this paper is to identify the signals of a renewed impetus in the creation of mural paintings in this particular ecclesiastical jurisdiction during the late eighteenth century.
We suggest that the creation of specific iconographical programs in this area does not obey only to standardized catechetical solutions, but on the contrary, it follows the need to recognize the particular necessities of these communities. This explains the pursuit of an image repertory that could satisfy the religious requirements of the indigenous groups of the region.
