The article analyses the use of dif ferent structural materials in the construction of tall buildings, ranging from the first use of r einforced masonry walls and the achievements obtained by the same, right up to the most modern practices. The pr edominance of steel structures that lasted over 50 years has since given way to the use of high-performance concr etes. A further two special concretes are also being employed in the form of self-compacting concretes, used to minimise voids in areas of high r einforcement, and lightweight concr ete used in the horizontal structur e to reduce loading.
