Tras acotar lo que se puede entender como un edificio alto históricamente y en la actualidad, así como distinguir entre conceptos como altura y esbeltez, este documento hace un breve repaso de los orígenes y causas de la explosión de los edificios altos en el siglo XIX. Se hace un repaso de los datos que permiten conocer las alturas reales de los mayores edificios actuales, así como de los materiales que constituyen su estructura y los usos y ubicación geográfica, así como algunos criterios de proyecto y construcción. Finalmente se realiza una breve prospección.

This article starts by defining both contemporary and historic tall buildings, before distinguishing between the concepts of height and slenderness and then providing a brief summary of the origins and causes of the proliferation in tall buildings throughout the 19th century. The author revises available data to establish the real heights of the tallest buildings today and the construction materials used in the same, their allocated uses and geographical location together with certain specific design and construction criteria. The article concludes with a brief forecast of the future of tall buildings.
