Resumen de A recepção do Vocabolario della Crusca e do Dictionnaire de l'Académie na lexicografia portuguesa: o Vocabulario (1712-1728) de Rafael Bluteau

João Paulo Silvestre

  • At the beginning of the 18th century, the first full-size dictionary in Portuguese is produced, following the publication of the third edition of the Vocabolario della Crusca (1691), of the Dictionnaire de l(Académie Française (1694) and at a time when the Diccionario de la lengua castellana (1726-1739) was already in preparation. Rafael Bluteau sets in motion the composition of the Vocabulario Portuguez e Latino (1712-1728) in an attempt to reproduce in Portugal the working methods, the purposes and functions generally attributed to the early vernacular European dictionaries, specifically the organisation of academic sessions. However, intellectuals were not concerned with metalinguistic reflection and in the end the lexicographer compiled a dictionary for the Portuguese language that achieved the same functions of institutional dictionaries, resorting to the authoritative literary corpus and translation of French lexicography. Though displaying shortcomings at a conceptual level, it will become the major source for modern lexicography in Portuguese.
