El «afropesimismo» que imperaba hace apenas diez años se ha transformado en «afrooptimismo». El África subsahariana hace gala de un crecimiento económico sostenido y la celebración de elecciones multipartidistas se ha convertido en la norma. Sin embargo, el progreso es aún frágil, la pobreza sigue muy extendida y la conflictividad y el terrorismo constituyen una seria amenaza. Antiguas y nuevas potencias compiten por extender su influencia y reforzar sus relaciones con el continente. La próxima cumbre Unión Europea-África será una buena oportunidad para revitalizar la asociación euro-africana.

The «afro-pesimism» that prevailed only ten years ago has turned into «afro-optimism». Subsaharan Africa shows a sustained economic growth and the holding of multi-party elections has become the rule. Yet progress is still fragile, poverty remains widespread and conflicts and terrorism pose a serious threat. Old and new powers compete to expand their influence and strengthen their relations with the continent. The upcoming EU-Africa Summit will be a good opportunity to revitalize the Euro-African association.
