  En la encrucijada entre los siglos XIX y XX, entre comparatismo y estructuralismo, Charles Bally y Ferdinand Brunot se fijaron como objetivo, cada uno a su manera, renovar completamente la gramática francesa y su enseñanza. En el plano de la gramática, a pesar de una voluntad común de innovación, sus posiciones se opondrán radicalmente sobre la diacronía y el método histórico. Lo mismo ocurre con sus planteamientos sobre la enseñanza del francés, que aunque parten de una misma voluntad de reorganizarlo todo y coinciden en el rechazo a la tradición, se oponen en cuanto a los medios y métodos a implantar.

  At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, between comparatism and structuralism, Ferdinand Brunot and Charles Bally aimed, each one in his own wa1y, to fully refresh French grammar and teaching. In the context of grammar, despite their common will to innovation, their positions in relation to diachrony and historical method were radically different. So were also their positions on the teaching of French. Here, although sharing the same will to reorganize everything and the same rejection of tradition, both Brunot and Bally diverge in dealing with the means to be used and the methods to be implemented.

  À la charnière des XIXe et XXe siècles, entre comparatisme et structuralisme, Charles Bally et Ferdinand Brunot se donnaient comme objectif, chacun à sa manière, de renouveler intégralement la grammaire française et son enseignement. Au plan de la grammaire, malgré une volonté commune d�innovation, leurs positions par rapport à la diachronie et à la méthode historique seront radicalement opposées. Ainsi en est-il également de leurs positions sur l�enseignement du français, qui si elles partent de cette même volonté de tout réorganiser et s�unissent dans le rejet de la tradition, bifurquent sur les moyens et méthodes à mettre en oeuvre.
