There is a growing interest in the use of hands-on learning activities in undergraduate mathematics classrooms, as evidenced by over 70 well-attended talks during MAA Special Sessions on tactile learning activities at the 2012 and 2013 Joint Mathematics Meetings. This article introduces a special issue of PRIMUS dedicated to hands-on learning activities, giving an overview of the pedagogical foundations as well as a short overview of the included articles which cover activities ranging from precalculus to upper level mathematics courses.
