  • The article focuses on advocates and activists in 2013. It comments on activists Alexey Davydov and Igor Kochetkov who have been advocating LGBT rights in Russia, with Davydov one of the founders of the LGBT organization Moscow Pride who died of kidney failure in 2013. It mentions activist and legal scholar Xu Zhiyong who founded the human rights network New Citizens' Movement in China. It talks about 16-year-old activist Malala Yousafzai who was shot by a Taliban gunman in October 2012 but has had a quick recovery and launched the initiative the Malala Fund in cooperation with actress Angelina Jolie which is designed to bolster education for girls in developing countries.
