Resumen de La Guerra Civil en Siria y el Programa Nuclear Iraní: dos cuestiones fundamentales en el Medio Oriente

  En el siguiente artículo abordaremos dos grandes conflictos que se desarrollan en el Medio Oriente estrechamente relacionados entre sí. En primer lugar, haremos referencia a las características geopolíticas de la región y luego al interés de Irán de consolidarse como una potencia regional, y al enfrentamiento que mantiene con los Estados Unidos. Describiremos las características de la guerra civil en Siria y las luchas étnicas y religiosas a las que dan lugar, destacando las dificultades para hallar una solución consensuada, la gran crisis humanitaria existente y la incertidumbre acerca de su resultado final. En segundo lugar, analizaremos el plan nuclear iraní, describiendo su tratamiento en el OIEA y en el Consejo de Seguridad, así como los intentos internacionales para evitar que Irán llegue a tener una capacidad nuclear militar. Tanto Siria como Irán han buscado la cooperación de Rusia. Moscú tiene intereses estratégicos en Siria originados en el período de la Guerra Fría, mientras que a Irán le suministra tecnología nuclear y militar, situaciones a través de las cuales pretende consolidar su gravitación en el Medio Oriente

  This article offers insights into two present-day conflicts unfolding in the Middle East: Syria�s civil war and tensions arising from Iran�s nuclear proliferation policy. For the Syrian case study, the author offers and overview of key historic factors that have contributed to some of the geopolitical problems which underline aspects of the current conflict. An emphasis is placed on surfacing the ethnic tensions in Syria and mapping the complexity of the humanitarian crisis in the region. The Iranian case study includes a discussion about the expanding Iranian national nuclear program. An analysis is also provided about key multi-lateral efforts to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear military power through the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Security Council.

  Both, Syria and Iran have sought the support of Russia. Moscow�s inclination to collaborate is explained by strategic drivers at a key policy level that ensure its exerting a strong foothold in Middle Eastern action: Syria has been his ally since the Cold War; Iran on the other hand, is getting military capabilities and nuclear development
