Resumen de Alimentación de los pollos de Pico Menor (Dendrocopos minor) en un nido de la Val d'Aran (Lleida, NE de España)

José Luis Romero

  • Data on the diet of nestlings of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor were obtained by means of dired observations in the first nest discovered in the Val d'Aran. Adults mainly feed their chicks with inseds and spiders, comprising Coleoptera (44%), Lepidoptera (13%), Formicida (10%), Arachnida (4%) and Diptera (2%). 27% of the prey items remained unidentified (n=339). The female fed the chicks more often than the male, especially in the early morning, although later in the day the number of visits to the nest by each sex was similar. The food taken by the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in this study is rather similar to that recorded in other studies in Europe, although showing some differences in the relative abundance of the different types of prey
