This paper explains the current status of the Purple Swamphen in Castilla-Lo Mancha (Central Spain) by onolysing published records and using the authors' unpublished data. The first records date from 1987 in Las Lagunas de Ruidera. Currently, the species has colonised some areos of the Guadiana and Tagus basins. The Purple Swamphen has probobly expanded to Castilla-La Mancha from the increasing Andalusian population. It is suggested that the protection of the species ond its natural habitat may be more effective than reintroduction.
