The status of the Hawfinch in Catolonia (NE Spain) was analysed through observations compiled by inquiry (n= 780) and ringing data (n= 114). The species occurred in all the bioclimatic stages from Euro-siberian to typically Mediterranean. Most of the observations referred to wintering birds, mainly located near forests with neffle-trees Celtis australis. There was marked inter-yeor variation in the numbers of wintering birds present, supporting the view that the Hawfinch behaves like an irruptive species. The arrival of birds at their wintering areas occurred from early October to late November, while spring rnigration began in late February, with the /ast migrants being detected still in their wintering areas as late as April. As a breeding bird, the Howfinch was exfremely rare with very liffle definite evidence of nesting. The distribution of the species should be viewed with caution due to the possible bias in the data, caused by the difference in the number of ornithologists actively working in certain areas.
