Resumen de Distribución del Pico Menor Dendrocopos minor en Salamanca

Jesús Serradilla Rodríguez, Jesús María Calvo Macho

  • The distribution of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in Salamanca is updated, and an evaluation on the size of its population in this province is presented for the first time. From April 1993 to August 2000, altogether 153 contacts with the species were noted in Salamanca. Most of the observations occurred in the decidous forest, especially in Pyrenean oak Quercus pyrenaica forest (124, 79, 5%). We have distiguished four population pockets. The obtained densities in the three main nuclei range from 0 to 0.5 territoires/10 ha for the whole area of our study. From these data we estimate a population scattered over 1, 625 (465-2, 785) territories. This population can probably be regarded as the most important in the Iberian Peninsula, along with the population in the rest of the Sistema Central mountains.
