    The last few decades of the 19th century and the first few of the 20th saw a major migratory flow between the Algarve and Andalusia through the border at Ayamonte, involving thousand of Portuguese citizens every year. The most common destinations for these Portuguese emigrants were the mines in the province of Huelva and the fields of the Guadalquivir Valley. The emigrants came mainly from the rural districts in the Algarve, where the population had increased to such an extent that the agriculture of the region could no longer sustain it. The demand for workers in Andalusia provided the inhabitants of the Algarve with an alternative to emigrating overseas.

    Nas últimas décadas do século xix e primeiras décadas do século xx rexistrouse un importante fluxo migratorio entre o Algarve e Andalucía a través da fronteira de Ayamonte que mobilizaba a millares de portugueses cada ano. Os destinos máis frecuentes destes emigrantes portugueses eran a cunca mineira onubense e as campiñas agrícolas do val do Guadalquivir. Os emigrantes procedían, principalmente, das comarcas rurais algarvías que coñeceran un forte incremento demográfico e que a economía de base agrícola non podía soster. A oferta de emprego dende Andalucía constituíu para os algarvíos unha alternativa á emigración a ultramar.
