Galician emigration to Argentina started around 1830, although the initial beginnings of this flow date back to the end of the 18th century. An estimated number of 725,000 to 850,000 Galicians emigrated between the years 1830 and 1939. This emigration was attracted mainly by the prospect of working in towns and cities, with a high concentration in the city of Buenos Aires, very few emigrants wanting to work on the land. The article reviews different quantitative characteristics of this flow, such as its fluctuations, ageing, feminisation and literacy rates amongst Galician emigrants in Argentina, before going on to analyse the causes that favoured the phenomenon itself. Finally, some reflections are made on the effects of returning immigrants on the development of the Galician economy and society.
