Most part of the Ivory Coast sedimentary basin, the formation of which is a consequence of the South Atlantic opening, is located off-shore on the northern margin of the Guinea Gulf. Available data are essentially furnished by petroleum deep holes. The D1-1X well, located south-west off Abidjan, crosses a thick sedimentary series, Late Miocene to Albian in age. Foraminiferal study reveals a probable depositional gap (eugubina Zone) at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. The Middle to Late Maastrichtian deposits are overlain by Early Paleocene deposits, characterized by planktonic foraminiferal assemblages (pseudobulloides and trinidadensis Zones). The Paleocene deposits, 200 meters thick, are directly overlain by a Early Miocene sequence. Maastrichtian and Paleocene benthic foraminiferal assemblages characterized an outer shelf to upper slope depositional environment. Planktic foraminifera are described and figured.
