  • Resumen
    • The present study of the genus Callistocythere in the Brazil Continental shelf was based on the analysis of 713 samples of REMAC Project, 92 of GEOMAR VI, 79 of GEOMAR III and 39 of GEOMAR II, together with 11 samples collected by the RV "El Austral". Four new species are described: C. Sigmocostelata, C. Laminata, C. Fossulata and C. Multicellulosa. Three species have been previously described from other areas, these are: C. Litoralensis (Rossi de García, 1966), C. Ornata (Hartmann, 1956) and C. Cranekeyensis (Puri, 1960). Analysis of the geographical distribution of the species in the studied area has revealed the existence of three assemblages: 1-all species, excep C. Litoralensis (Northern/Eastern Assemblage); 2-C. Litoralensis (Southern Assemblage); 3- all species except C. Litoralensis and C. Cranekeyensis (Transitional Assemblage). Based on this study, the Southern limit of the Transitional Assemblage is extended to latitude 23ºS. The majority of the species is epineritic (<40m) and prefer warm waters; only C. Litoralensis occurs in the area of influence of cool waters from the South via the Falkland Current.
