Resumen de Some Cretaceous Ostracoda from Nigeria

F. M. Swain, S.W. Petters, Xie Chuanli

  • A fauna of 32 species of marine Ostracoda is described and illustated from the middle and late Cretaceous of three sedimentary basins in Nigeria. One species was recovered from the Albian of the Benue Trough, eastern Nigeria; four species are from the Cenomanian of the Benue Trough; three species are from the Coniacian of the southern Benue Trough; nine species are from the early and late Maastrichtian of the lullemmeden Basin, northern Nigeria. One of the lullemmeden Basin species is also common in the Dahomey Basin, western Nigeria, suggesting an occasional marine connection betweeen the southern end of the Saharan (Tethyan) Sea and the Atlantic in the Maastrichtian. Two and possibly three unconformity-bound stratigraphic sequences can be recognized in the lullemmeden Basin. Those in the late Cretaceous and in the Paleocene contain distinctive ostracode faunas.
