The twelfth century in Byzantium is known because of the cultural rise started by an Empire that longed to restore the fame of its past. The revival of classical literature had a key role in representing the former glory, and, for that reason, it was one of the elements around which the "Byzantine identity" was formed. However, the limits would be imposed by its coexistence with two other components, as were the religion and the "other". Moreover, the desire to reflect the spirit of the classical authors, including their language, was a major constraint for the dissemination of the new literary production
