    Las novelas de Arthur Machen El gran dios Pan (1894) y Los tres impostores (1895) desarrollan el tema de la irrupción del Mundo Antiguo sobre el mundo moderno. El peligro de dicha irrupción está dado por la regresión (la pérdida de los rasgos civilizados y el retorno a un estado bestial), y el modo de conjurarla aparece por medio del anacronismo. Las manifestaciones de la regresión son múltiples, y van desde el regreso a una Naturaleza primigenia, el sensualismo desatado, la mutabilidad de los cuerpos y la imposibilidad del lenguaje para dar cuenta del horror. Frente a estas manifestaciones, la solución que las novelas proponen es anacrónica, en tanto que las fuerzas ocultas no son vencidas desde la lógica racional, propia del mundo moderno, sino desde las supersticiones o los antiguos saberes, aquéllos que ya se creían desterrados en la sociedad decimonónica

    The novels of Arthur Machen The Great God Pan (1894) and The Three Impostors (1895) develop the theme of the emergence of the ancient world on the modern world. The danger of such invasion is given by the regression (loss of civilized traits and return to a bestial state), whereas the resolution is given by anachronism. The manifestations of regression are many, ranging from the return to primitive Nature, the sensuality unleashed, the mutability of bodies and the inability of language to account for the horror. The solution that the novels propose is anachronic, while the hidden forces are not due from the rational logic, typical of the modern world, but from the ancient superstitions or knowledge, those who already believed in exile during the society of the nineteenth-century
