Resumen de Seven Thesis on religion and secularization

Florian Schuller

  • The author presents seven theses: 1) to have the act of faith justified by one's own reason leads inevitably to a ethicitazion of faith: a disastrous development; 2) Norberto Bobbio knows about the limitations of reason which can enlighten only a tiny part of the darkness that surrounds us; it is for this that Bobbio uses the term religious; 3) religion has become a kind of umbrella term that offers space for a great lot of meaning; yet the most urgent challenge is the one which Johann Baptist Metz calls the "question of God"; 4) an ecumenism of a third kind becomes necessary: the first between the Christian churches, the second between the religions, the third between believing and non-believing contemporaries; 5) an intellectual is by definition lonely: he or she cannot rely on an ideological community; today this is equally true for a Christian, even a Catholic; 6) it is within this loneliness which unites the agnostic and atheist with the believer; 7) José Casanova diagnoses for Europe: "Not the religions are a problem for Europe but the assumption that only secular societies are democratic societies." Yet, fear is a bad advisor, particularly for dialogue.
