Resumen de Sul contrasto fra cultura laica e cultura religiosa

Virgilio Mura

  • On the Clash of Religious and Secular Culture The authors first defines "secular culture" by opposition to "religious culture" and then clarifies why it is not self-evident that a person who recognizes himself or herself in a form of "secular culture" has to be an atheist; similarly, it is not clear why all atheists would belong to a "secular culture". Laïcité, in its methodological dimension, is indifferent and not hostile to religion. However, it cannot be denied that secular culture and religious culture represent opposed and irreducible worldviews: The first is inspired by anthropocentric immanence while the latter is inspired by theocentric transcendentalism. On the theoretical level, this clash is hard to overcome because both systems are based on arbitrary assumptions that are not susceptible of being subjected to a judgment of truth or falsity. On the practical level, nonetheless, there might be common values justified in different ways by the two cultures.
